Biographical Note

Anne "Annie" Carter previous hit Lee  next hit, born in 1839, was the fourth child of General Robert E. previous hit Lee  next hit and Mary Anna Randolph Custis. She maintained a close relationship with her famous father. Anne suffered poor health throughout her short life, but nevertheless devoted much of her time to teaching enslaved children Bible scriptures and lessons at the previous hit Lee  next hit family residence, Arlington House. She died in 1862 of typhoid fever.

Scope and Content

This collection contains a letter of invitation from Anna previous hit Lee  next hit to Confederate General P. G. T. Beauregard of the Confederate Army to attend a country dance at Meadow Farm in Henrico previous hit County  next hit, Virginia, on Christmas evening 1861 during the American Civil War. The letter is dated December 17, 1861 from Meadow Farm home to the Sheppard Family.
